Breasts enter to the woman’s life together with adolescence period and become a part of the woman’s body in differing meanings and significances depending on the period the woman is in. These organs represent beauty, youth, self-confidence, sexuality and fertility as well as motherhood. These organs may be the most important symbols to put forth femininity and aesthetic related properties of a body. These organs containing a physiologic, anatomic and emotional combination are very important for women. For the above-mentioned reasons, mammoplasty is a complex procedure containing both physical and emotional parameters.

How To Define An Aesthetic Breast?

This definition, certainly, may differ from person to person but we may define an aesthetic breast as follows: a breast which is proportional to the person’s body in size, conforming to the person’s body lines, having a conic shape when viewed from the front and a drop shape when viewed from the side without exceeding the fold line of the breast, and its nipple should be well-defined and the dark area surrounding the nipple should be proportionate to the size of the breast itself.

Factors such as increasing age, giving birth, breastfeeding, and gaining and losing weight cause deformations in the tissue and structure of the breast. In certain cases originating from genes and hormones, the breast tissue could gain a shape bigger, smaller or asymmetric in proportion to the body together with adolescence. In certain cases, on the other hand, structural deformities could occur due to diseases such as breast cancer and their therapies.

If a woman has complaints about the size (bigger or smaller proportionate to the body), asymmetric appearance, floppiness of the breast or the shape of the nipple, the problems could be resolved by plastic surgeries.

Bra and Cup (Bone) Sizes:

The measurement of the breast girth passing on the fold line of the breasts gives the bra size value. Bra sizes increase by 5 cm units and the intermediate values are taken as the upper next value (75, 80, 85, 90 etc). The difference between the value obtained after the measurement of the breast girth passing on the nipples’ line and bra size measurement value gives cup (bone) value and classified as A, B, C, D and DD. The cup size of the bra size is written next to the numerical value (75B, 80A etc.) and the size is obtained this way.

Bra Values & Cup (Bone) Values:

equal to 70cm 70
71 – 75 6.5-13   –> B
76 – 80 14-19.5 –> C
81 – 85 19.5-26 –> D
90 100______100 >26______DD

The researches show that breast augmentation surgeries are the most satisfactory surgeries related to breast aesthetics.
Additionally, it is the most popular surgery within the conducted plastic surgeries. Breast implants (silicon or serum physiologic) could be used in breast augmentation surgeries as well as the patient’s own tissue (fat-grafting). The purpose is to augment and shape the breast tissue. Breast implants come in different types in terms of the filling material (silicon gel, serum physiologic), shape (round, drop-shaped) and the features of its surface (flat surface, ragged surface). The used prosthetic materials are certified by FDA (Food and Drug Administration, USA) and harmless to human health.

Breast augmentation surgeries are commonly preferred by young and middle-aged women. People younger than 18 years old are not to be performed surgery except special circumstances.

How Is Breast Reduction Surgery Performed and How Is The Period After The Surgery?

The necessary measurements and drawings are done at the surgery day in the evaluation. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and it takes approx. 2-3 hours. The time increases as the breast gets bigger. The drain is attached during the surgery. The drain is removed within 1-2 days after the surgery. Usually, the patient needs to stay in the hospital for 1 night. A special support is worn after the surgery. Sports bras without under-wires are used after the 4th week. The patient could return to her social life after 1 week. During 4 weeks, the patient should not perform any sports except walking, should not lift weights, and be especially careful with the arm movements. Sports activities may be performed at the end of 6th week. It takes about 1-3 months for the bruises and swelling in the breast tissue to be reduced and the breast to gain its desired form. The breast reaches its final form within 6-8 months.

Treatment Plan

  • Stay in Turkey :  2-3 Days
  • Stay in Hospital :  1 Day
  • Operation Type : General anesthesia
  • Companion  : Not needed. Patient can take care of himself.
  • Surgery Time  : 1 – 2 Hours

Is There Any Pain After The Surgery?

Not much pain is expected after the breast reduction operation. If there is any pain, it could easily be relieved with painkillers.

Would Surgery Cause Loss Of Breast Feeding Function and Sense?

Breast augmentation operation does not obstruct breastfeeding. Permanent sense loss could be experienced very rarely after breast augmentation surgeries.

How Is Scarring In The Breast Augmentation Surgery?

In the breast augmentation surgeries, the circle of the nipple and the fold line of the breast together with the parallel line are used most commonly for the cut. The surgical scar is hard to notice due to its location. Most of the time, these scars gain a very indistinct form in a few years. Still, the healing of the scar is specific to the person in question. Very rarely, some patients may experience excessive scar healing (cheloid, hypertrophic scar).

The most important factors to determine the success of breast augmentation surgery are understanding of the expectations and needs of the patient and the correct planning of the size, type, and location of the implants.
